A Breif History of Motoring in the UK

The UK has a rich history of motoring. Dating back to the late 1600s when a crude but effective engine was developed to pump water from coal mines through to Richard Trevithick's 'Camborne' steam powered motor vehicle in the early 1800s, the 'Red Flag Act' (or the Locomotives Highway Act to use its correct term), and later on to 1896 when the act was repealed and the year that the British Motor Industry takes its first real foothold in British Motor Manufacturing and Production.

UK's Motor Car Act

In 1903, UK Parliament passes the 'Motor Car Act' and issues the first UK Driving Licences and Vehicle Number Registrations (Number Plates). Amazingly, the speed limit at this time is still limited to 15mph.
