About The Car Life Museum

Car Life Museum showcases the special collection of Newton MacKay, whose mission was to preserve the vehicles of the island that time forgot. From century old farm equipment that worked the rich red soil of Prince Edward Island’s farmlands to the muscle cars that cruised country roads winding through emerald green fields, MacKay’s unique museum is the island’s history on wheels. Lose yourself in time gone by as you vacation on P.E.I It all began long ago. A vision to preserve. A passion for the people and the cars and machines they drove in one remote corner of North America. Newton MacKay knew some Island cars were unique and different. He started collecting cars in the late 1950's, restoring a 1925 Model T Ford, then with a 1930 Model A. A natural negotiator, Newton saw the rolling history of Prince Edward Island he wished to preserved and went after it. Whether a 1925 Mclaughlin Buick Hearse, or the world’s first reaper built in 1831, Newton knew what he wanted in his museum. After two years of negotiation he finally acquired a 1920 McLaughlin Buick Touring Car. He restored it and took it to the first Halifax Auto show in 1964, where it won 'Best in Class', 'Best Paint', and 'Best of Show'. Newton returned to the Island energized to fullfill his dream of opening an antique car museum . Car Life Museum opened in the location it is today back in 1966. There were eight cars on display then, and Newton continued to expand the collection until his sudden passing in June 1979 at just fifty years of age. His sons continued the mission, and now the collection is five times larger and growning. His wife Doris continues to operate the 10,000 square foot museum with the sons and grandchildren. *Image is not necessarily one of the museum.
