About The London Ambulance Service Museum

The London Fire Brigade Museum is located on Southwark Bridge Road. Most of the Museum’s collection is housed in Winchester House, a 19th century mansion that forms part of the Brigade’s former central training centre. The building is Grade II listed. Larger artefacts are located in the ground floor appliance bay of an adjoining building. The museum houses a collection of vintage radio equipment, memorabilia from both World Wars and a photographic and document archive. There's also a collection of more than 20 vintage vehicles, from a 1870s horse-drawn ambulance to one of the first paramedic Motor Cycles introduced in the early 1990s. The Museum collection contains a wide variety of artefacts such as firefighting equipment and uniforms, paintings, models, photographs, vehicles and documents, dating from the Great Fire of London in 1666 to the present day. Fifty per cent of the Museum collection is owned directly by the Authority, 45 per cent of the items are donated and five per cent are loaned items. The Museum recently received a grant from AIM to restore a painting by a firefighter artist during the Second World War. The Museum belongs to the Medals Network which facilitates dialogue and debate around research methodologies, interpretation, display and learning programmes for British collections which hold coins, medals, tokens and paper money. The Museum also contributes to the Fire Heritage Network by offering curatorial advice to other fire and rescue Museums, fire heritage collections and fire service enthusiast groups who are dedicated to the study and preservation of Britain’s proud fire service history. The Fire Heritage Network UK has 40 members all from fire heritage organisations. Approximately 12 (including LFB) are Museums/ heritage groups run or supported by their fire service. *Image is not necessarily one of the museum.
